Sound
If you play clean, you can expect these pickups to give you a powerful midrange while maintaining an aggressive top-end that will guarantee you’ll cut through in the mix.
When playing with distortion, you’ll love the natural “chainsaw” grind from our traditional P90 design. The highs are clear and bold, with the right amount of pick attack and definition. The midrange is fat and snarly, not like the traditional Jazzmaster ‘Alnico Sparkle.’ Instead, you’ll get a snarlier, barkier tone that is percussive and bold. Chords will be thick and crunchy, with top-end bite. Expect more power and output, as this model is quick to break up and get dirty.
Our manufacturing process allows us to achieve unparalleled quality control and incredible tone. When Lindy designed this pickup, he wanted to recreate a P90 tone for the Jazzmaster. Steel Pole Jazzmasters consist of USA-Made Alnico IV magnets, locally-crafted fiberboard bobbins, and USA-Made wire. We wind each pickup by hand, one at a time, and wind each pickup using our proprietary “Sectioning” technique. Doing this gives the pickup a sweet, clear tone.
Finally, we assemble each pickup one at a time, by hand. Hand assembling pickups allows us to achieve unbeatable attention to detail. After assembly, we wax-pot the pickup to preserve the pickup and prevent microphonics.

Loving these after a couple of weeks’ use. With standard winding, they are a bit thicker and raunchier than my CVJM’s stock pickups, and these make the guitar much more versatile, for my purposes. Not overly noisy either, even without being ‘hum canceling’–would definitely recommend.
Note the 3-wire installation tip in the FAQ, which I only realized was there after googling and some confusion, as a wannabe guitar-tech.
-
Top notch pickups. Big, bold and articulate. More punch and grit than a standard jazzmaster pickup. Lots of low end without being dark.
-
My Jazzmaster is now actually a Jazz master! That being said, they are definitely not limited to the Jazz genre. Every time I play, new and beautifully detailed aspects are revealed. They really are the best of the single/humbucker worlds.
-
Own several Gibson P90-equipped guitars. Tried other Jazzmaster/P90 pickups in AVRI Jazzmaster. For me, the Fralin version comes the closest to sounding like an actual P90. Customer service was fantastic.
-
These are the best sounding pickups that I have ever had. They give me the mid range punch that sounds amazing with my fuzz pedals. I moved the pickup farther away from the treble strings than usual, but I got exactly what I wanted. Also, they are a bit noisy but I use a noise suppressor. Way worth the trade off.
-
After much research went with these Steel Pole P90’s on my Partsmaster. These are by far the best pickups ever played much less owned. Even tone across the board with the perfect amount of bite. I have played over 30 years and never enjoyed the tone of the neck pickup until now. Its like a whole new world has opened up for me. I don’t think I will put any other kind of pickups in my builds from now on. Bravo!

Jazzmaster P90 Punch
I installed a Fralin Steel-Pole/P90 JM neck pup in a Jazzmaster “parts caster” which has a maple neck. The guitar always seemed too “bright” until I put the Fralin P90 in it, and the sound is great! Very punchy and much clarity, highly recommend!!
-
Beefy!
I put this in a guitar with a twang master and the combo is quite beautiful to behold! On its own, the p90 also sounds great. -
These pickups rule! The first thing I do in every guitar I get is put Fralins in. They are the best sounding pickups made. Nuff said.
-
Steel-Poled pickups are amazing!
These pickups brought my Jazzmaster back to life! Thanks to the solid recommendation from Jon Brown, my guitar has a solid bite, equally balanced in the highs and lows of my guitar’s tone. Thanks so much! -
Kickass! I swapped my stock squier jazzmaster bridge pickup for the steel pole version. The increased output, clarity, and sensitivity is exactly what I wanted.
-
Jazzmaster came to life! The pickups really add the little something extra I needed from my MIJ Jazzmaster. The stock pickups were really weak sounding and now they really have some grit without all the hum associated with single coils.
-
I swapped out my stock Jazzmaster pickups from another boutique brand in a Collings 360 LT M and installed Fralin Steel-Poled Jazzmaster pickups. I have never looked back and wonder why Collings doesn’t offer this as a option for their guitars. Amazing pickups!
-
I just installed these pickups in my G&L Doheny and they sound $&@%#* amazing! The tone is very full and thick, but not at all muddy, with really great bass response. Highs are still clear, but the brittleness and shrillness of typical JM pickups are gone (thank Jeebus). To my ears, these pickups are the perfect mix of humbucker fullness and bass response, with the midrange punch and bite only a single coil can have. I opted for a 5% overwind in the bridge and a stock neck, which fits my style and needs perfectly.
