Sound
We have 3 outputs available: Vintage, Blues, and High Output. We use our same formula and amount of turns as we do on our Vintage Hots, Blues Specials, and High Output Strat pickups.
Vintage:
The Vintage Output will sound the cleanest. They are the truest to the original Vintage Mustangs. Vintage Output Mustangs sound best with 250K pots. The Vintage Output Mustang will sparkle and sound very clear. Don’t expect it to sound “tinny” or glassy – these are still warm and full-bodied. They sound big and wide, with an even balance of Bass, Middle, and Treble. Expect a dynamic and thick buttery grind with distortion. Also, you’ll notice a clear low-end and a sharp attack. Single notes cut through with ease while chords have an excellent string-to-string definition.
Blues Special:
When playing clean, Blues Specials sound thick and rich, especially in the lows and mids. Additionally, Blues Specials sound very open and clear without sounding too compressed. The 5% overwound coil gives the player 5% less highs and 5% more mids than the Vintage Output Mustang. Expect a medium attack, low-end growl, and a compressed grind with distortion. These, like the Vintage output, sound best with 250K pots.
High Output:
When playing clean, High Output Mustang Pickups sound very thick and dark, simply because of the increased mids and lows, and less highs. Additionally, High Outputs have a nice compressed, beefy sound. With distortion, the tone remains thick and fat while being slightly compressed and thick with a low-end growl and a medium attack. You can expect 10% less highs and 10% more mids and power than a vintage-sounding pickup. The High Output Mustang Replacements will give you a lot more power than most pickups and will break up a lot quicker than lower output replacements. You’ll want 500K pots for this pickup.

Was looking for replacement PUs for a ’66 US Mustang, primarily because the original pickups, which are fine, sounded a little weak when switching between guitars, especially compared to my Telecaster. So I chose the blues special set et voilá…! Now the guitar is a little more on the beefier side, but still very articulate, even a little more, than the og… Thank you very much!
-
Great pickups! Easy installation and tips provided to make the swap a piece of cake. These pickups really brought my 66 Mustang back to life. Fabulous tone.
-
Best custom pickups I have ever heard. Great service and a real person to talk to. Thank you -these are amazing.
-
Love the vintage bridge pickup! Wanted a tone closer to a Tele and it does that for me. I think I will eventually get the neck pickup as well to round out the guitar.

UNBELIEVABLE LIGHTNESS AND CLARITY (BLUES SPECIAL)
These pickups are a blessing, they cost but they are worth what they cost,
its elaboration is of high quality, nothing to envy to any other guitar, the wiring harness scheme works 100%; the brightness is great, the mid-frequency is fresh and nothing super strident, the bass is super good, these pickups are actually an upgrade for a Fender Vintera 60s Mustang guitar, I have been delighted and at the same time the good customer service, you feel like family, very cool everything
The shipping was great and fast, and its packaging was super nice!> I’M HAPPY! THANKS to Mr.John and the entire Fralin Pickups CREW -
Pick ups sound pretty close to originals. A little pricey but sound good.

My luthier just installed the hot vintages, I must say I am extremely disappointed. Reading all the good reviews I expected my Mustang to sound great. But the sound is not there, it sounds unbalanced, with an exaggerated volume on the low E string, and very shrill highs (even if I followed Lindy Fralin’s advice on the height of the microphones). The output level is very low which is really annoying for many of my effects pedals which don’t react like with my other guitars. Despite this they are well built, and look like they were made with care. Only the sound is not up to date.

Hey Adrien, thanks for taking the time to leave us this review, and we’re sorry that you’re not thrilled with your pickups. I’m going to have a customer service rep reach out to help figure out how we can make it right.

Vintage Hot. Perfect. No Brainer for a mustang. Gives a little added sustain and juice needed in these short scale monsters. All the good and none of the bad!
-
I had a blues special installed with a seymour duncan hot rail in a MIM Fender Mustang. The blues special is one of the best pickups ever. It is very clean and articulate. Highly recommended.
-
My luthier installed the Mustang Vintage Hot Neck pickup in my 1957 Musicmaster, replacing the dead original pickup, and it’s never sounded better! Crystal clear and balanced vintage tone. Couldn’t be happier!
-
I got the blues version to replace the stock strat pickups in my Squier 65 reissue Mustang and, unsurprisingly, they were an immediate and massive upgrade. I’ve had my Mustang rewired with a stereo jack, so each pickup goes to its own amp, neck to a solid state Sunn Beta Lead 2×12 combo and bridge to a 70s Burman 2×12 tube combo. I didn’t change any settings on either amp or my pedals after I dropped in the new pickups and the difference was profound. Higher output, better articulation, crisp and bright but still plenty of heft without the mud. I even got a complement on the improved sound from my drummer, maybe the only time ever!
-
Thank you Lindy and team from across “The Pond”. Did my research for a restoration project and thought a pair of Mustang pickups was what I needed but your help and expertise were invaluable. I am l, as we say in England, chuffed” (means very happy!) with my pickups. High quality craftsmanship and presentation – and they were with me pretty damn quick!

Fralin Vintage-Hot Mustang Pickups
My original Mustang pickups were 1965 and were showing their age. They were very quiet. These vintage-hot pickups have the same tonal qualities but have the volume my originals were missing. Fantastic pickups. Highly recommend and will definitely buy from Fralin again.

Awesome! I give it 10 stars I have Lindys in my Strat too simply the best.

An unrivaled fullness
The sound on this pickup is phenomenal. It takes to my jc-120 like they were made for each other. As the title indicates, there is a really beautiful fullness that I get out of my neck position now that I am supremely happy about. -
Simply fantastic
I have one of the Fender Offset mustangs who are a couple of years old by now. It’s been my favourite guitar to pick up and play, but the sound has never really been «there».I got these delivered during a pre-prod so I’d been using the old pickups the first day and halfway thorugh day number two. The sound engineer did not really like the way my guitar sounded, but I kept telling her «oh, just you wait». The second they arrived my guitar tech popped them in and both our sound engineer of 20+ years in the biz and I were amazed. It had more clarity, more tops and still more bottom. Turned my cheap mexico-fender into a god damn beast. Yes, I highly recomend this product!!(!!!!)

Mustang Vintage Hot Set
Fantastic sound, absolutely satisfied with the item !!! the only small flaw to report: the holes on the cover did not correspond exactly to those of the pickup and I had to adapt them slightly. -
Pickups sound great!!!
-
Fender sound…and then some!!!
I love these pups, the clarity of the clean sound is unbelievable but when you push them a little they ROAR, they take very well all sorts of pedals. I could not be happier, get yours!
